Basotho History

The Basotho, also known as Sotho speakers, are said to have originated from the north of Southern Africa. The Basotho made their way down as various tribes settled in different parts of the country. Some groups settled in the west, while others settled in the east and further south. They identified themselves with clans and called them Liboko: Bahlakoana, Bakoena, Bafokeng, Basia, Bakhatla, Makhoakhoa, Bataung, Matebele and Batlokoa. They also did praises to define themselves and called them Lithoko. Basotho also had their distinctive way of dressing and won clothes like, thethana, seshoeshoe, kobo, mokototlo hat et al.

Ladies and gentlemen, you would agree with me that in this era, Basotho only wear those type of clothes in the times of funerals, cultural day and weddings.  It is no longer a norm to have a girl wearing thethana in town as it is discovered as exposing some of her body parts and judged as disgrace.
